Soviet Memorial of Honor in Treptower Park (7)

The Liberator, by the sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich - 12 m high, and weighing 70 (metric) tons.

The sculpture depicts a soldier, who with a heavy sword in his right hand has just shattered a swastika, and who hold an innocent child, whom he has just rescued, to his left shoulder. The child represents the innocent (Soviet) People, who, being liberated from fascism, now look forward to a rosy future. There is no triumphalism to be seen in the face and stature of the Liberator, but the alleviation of averted catastrophe. As if one may now finally begin in peace to pick up the pieces.
