Café Kranzler

While I was actually craving a piece of Apfelkuchen and a Kännchen Kaffee, I was tempted - just this once - to stop in at the Kranzler, but decided not to waste my money. I didn't stop for Kaffee und Kuchen along this route at all.

But not much is left of this Café anyway, perhaps once the most prestigious Café of Berlin. The original was founded in 1834 on Unter-den-Linden in Mitte and was destroyed in a bombing raid in 1944; this Charlottenburg branch on the Ku'damm was established in 1932. Its current building was erected in 1958, but while the building still remains, it is now occupied by a mall while the Kranzler itself has been relegated to the small rotunda on the roof, but a shadow of its former grandeur.
