Le Marais: Das war le Quartier Yiddische du Paris, mais alors been taken over by les Gay'im.
Vom Centre Pompidou in Richtung 4. Arrondissement gehend, kommt man zunächst an viele Schwulencafés vorbei, es kommen parfümierte Nebel aus Düsen. Die Straßen werden enger, und es verkehrt wenig Fahrzeug, dafür viel Fuß. Wir kommen in den Rue du Temple. Wo ist er, der Temple? Daran weiter vorbei, und wir sind darin, in dem jüdischen Viertel. Und zum Glück (was wir noch nicht wissen), ist heute Shabbat (na gut, das wissen wir schon), daher sind alle Läden geschlossen und es ist ruhig. Es ist dennoch beseelt, eine Begegnung mit einer verlorenen Welt. Am nächsten Tag sind wir wieder da, aber es ist kaum auszuhalten vor Touristenrummel. Jedenfalls nicht mehr genießbar noch interessant - wäre dies unsere erste Begegnung mit dem Marais, sein Zauber wäre uns entgangen. Ein Chassid geht an der alten Pavèe Synagoge vorbei. Ist er echt, oder arbeitet er als Touristenattraktion?
Heading East towards the 4th Arrondissement from the Center Pompidou, one first passes a whole series of gay cafés, where parfumed mists are emitted from jets. The roads get tighter and the traffic is less vehicular than pedestrian. We arrive in the Rue du Temple. Is this where it is, the Temple? Further on, and we're in the midst of it, the old Jewish quarter. And luckily (what we don't yet know), it is Shabbas (what we do know), and all is closed and serene. But it has its own aura anyway, it's an encounter with the remnant of a lost world. Next day we are there again, but now it is hard to stand the press of tourists. At least, it is no longer enjoyable or even interesting: if this had been our first encounter with the Marais, we would have missed its magic entirely. A Chassid passes by the old Pavèe synagogue. Is he authentic, or does he work as a tourist attraction?

Sicherlich der Höhepunkt unsres touristischen Erlebens was der Besuch des Musée d'art et d'histoire du Judaïsme, worin wir einen halben Tag verbrachten. Die Sammlungen decken vieles ab: Ein Raum zur hebraischen Schrift in Form von Grabmalfragmenten, ein Raum Holzmodelle von Synagogen, eine Sammlung ölbrennender Channuka'im aus der halben Welt, und Abteilungen zur Sephardi- bzw. Aschkenasi-Tradition. Unter vielem anderen.
Surely, the highpoint of our touristic endeavours was our visit to the Musée d'art et d'histoire du Judaïsme, which we found in the Rue du Temple, and where we spent half the day.
Collections covered many things, a room dedicated to Hebrew script in form of grave stone fragments, a room of wooden scale models of synagogues, a collection of oil-burning Channuka'im from half the world, sections devoted to either Sephardi or Ashkenazi traditions. Among much more.
