Mammoth 2009 index
Frank on final. Bill approaches the top. Bill approaches some more. And approaches. It's a rocky approach. But Bill is already reading the summit register when Frank arrives. Frank arrives! And Stella arrives, too! Happy summiteers. Enough already, let's head back. Bill and David may be carrying ski-poles, but Frank and Stella have fun "skiing" down the hill. (And boots full of rocks, too). Frank takes his poles in and out, but eventually packs them away fully. We regain David and have a short break where we had lunch. Then it's on over meadows and through stream beds. Through the boulders of the stream bed David proves much more agile with his sticks, while Stella and Frank try not to break any ankles. Bill discovers a family of sage grouse who do a very good imitation of a pile of rocks. Good thing we didn't step on them. The sun begins to set, and we take a final ragged break. And on homeward over the clinkers, let's be *happy* as we trudge on into the sunset over Saddlebag Lake and its pink rock fields.
