Mammoth Trip, 2019

Shepherd Crest

We also didn't know what sort of terrain to expect for the climb of the actual crest. It wasn't clear at all whether we'd be able to climb it, or how to go about it. It turned out to be of mid-sized talus imbedded in sand, an easily climbable substrate! There is virtually no exposure, no ledges, no huge gaps between boulders. Many of the rocks are loose and pose a danger - if a large one gets dislodged it could easily crush a leg. But with care, this risk can be eliminated. But climbing is tedious and slow. -F
