Bill decides to abandon the attempt, as he's skeptical about being able to downclimb if things become more difficult above. As a rule, we don't climb anything we can't get down. I spot him, and he gets down okay. But if this is an indication of the character of the route, we may well run into something insuperable above, and then have trouble getting down. No, we don't have a rope along. -F.
