The Anasazi were an agricultural society, practicing communal farming above on the mesa. They only became cliff-dwellers around 1200 CE, 800 years ago, when they began building "apartment complexes" of sandstone brick and adobe mortar under overhangs and in caves. Before that they lived on the mesa where their fields were.
