| Turning in to the spur road to the trailhead of the day's march, a flock of sheep and goats and their Diné shepherdess in traditional garb. Though followed by several other cars, I pulled over and got out my camera and photographed some sheep. The other cars did the same, and I heard the shepherdess screech No picture! No picture! I put away the camera and we were on our way. It is forbidden to photograph Navajo people without permission, or even to photograph many parts of the Rez. I wasn't going to disrespect her wish not to be photographed by me: it must feel akin to being an animal in a zoo, hunted by tourists with cameras. The sheep didn't seem to mind, however. |
