But the Gold Dust geckos aren't natives of the Hawai'ian Islands. They are an invasive species, native to Madagascar, that was introduced in eight exemplars by a student in 1974. Now they are ubiquitous. There are also other geckos, mostly stowaways on ships, that immigrated much, much longer ago. -F.
