During this drier period - it is speculated - years of famine occurred, prompting the adoption of new survival strategies. In good years of large harvests, grain needed to be stockpiled for bad times. The communuities living on the mesas relocated to the cliff faces. The cliff dwellings we see here were the result. The lower sections of these building complexes were inhabited by families, while the upper levels were used for communal grain storage; in fact, huge volumes of grain could be stored here. |
