The Cliff Palace is the largest among the dwelling complexes in the vicinity - in all of North America, actually.
It seems to have contained two separate communuities, separated by solid walls devoid of mutual passageways
except by a shared kiva between them. Of kivas, there were many - 23. Too many for the solitary use of the two resident communities. The complex across the canyon, however, contained too few, so it is assumed that those had their kivas here. Cliff Palace appears to have been established around 1190 CE, and was mostly built within about 20 years. Refurbishment continued to be carried out until about 1260 CE. By 1300 CE, for reasons unknown, the settlement had been abandoned. |
