Mammoth Trip, 2018

September 19

Attempt on Shepherd Crest

Without the water taxi, we had to march over the klinkers that line the southwestern edge of Saddlebag Lake. At the best of times I don't like walking on those, but with my sprained ankle not entirely healed, and the hiking boots laced very loosely because of the tendinitis, the going was very tedious. Stella and Bill marched ahead and Stella even radioed back because she was worried something had happened to me.

In the past our visits had featured back-to-back days of exertion, but this time I felt rather fatigued still from Tenaya Peak, and just sort of hoped I'd wake up when the fun started on the climb. -F.
